Intel Debuts Centrino Pro and New Branding
"If you're thinking of buying a laptop this summer, you'll likely see a new set of stickers from Intel. This year is a little different from previous years in that Intel is targeting two distinct segments: Corporate and Consumer. Today, Intel rolled out the corporate offering, called Intel Centrino Pro processor technology. With Centrino Pro, Intel Corporation extends innovative features previously designed for business desktops into its forthcoming high-performance laptop offering. "

"Most of us are familiar with the "Centrino" and currently, the "Centrino Duo" sticker, a brand Intel so ingeniously marketed and poured tons of money into. This is basically Intel's method of simplifying things for the consumer, masking all the technical jargon by condensing everything into one sticker. The Centrino Duo brand denotes three things: A motherboard chipset, a dual core processor (hence the Duo), and a wireless component. OEMs, or laptop vendors, will need all three of these components in order to get the coveted sticker. The Pro version is basically a superset of the consumer version, where Intel is planning to add one more requirement (on top of the three) in order for OEMs to get a Centrino Pro sticker."

"Come launch time, this year's platform, codenamed "Santa Rosa," will become the new flavor of Centrino, which will target both your average consumer and business professional. There's no word on the official branding yet on the consumer side. The Santa Rosa Platform will have a new chipset, new additions to the current processor line, and a new Wi-Fi platform supporting the 802.11n standard."
