Over the top of the next hill (sooner than you can imagine) comes Thanksgiving and on its heels, the December holiday season.
Thanksgiving is traditionally a day when we replace the stuffed turkey by being stuffed ourselves. We eat way too much food and some people drink too much alcohol. Addressing the latter, you teach most by what you model. Children do not know how to walk in the world so they look to the adults for direction on what kind of people they will choose to be.
If you don't want your children to be drawn to drinking alcohol, don't model drinking to relax or to have a good time. If you don't want your children to think a person is more amusing when intoxicated, don't get drunk around them. Your children may have other issues when deciding whether to drink alcohol or not, and studies show that parents who unwittingly model this choice Influence their precious children's choices.
Since I was in the car when a drunk driver came through a stop sign and killed my friend, I have some deep-seated issues about drinking and driving. Don't let a friend or family member drive if they have consumed too much alcohol.
Remember that sugar often causes children to be more active and feeding it to them before bedtime means they are not likely to settle down and get their needed rest. ... read the whole article
