Take care to preserve old family photographs
Q: I inherited some old family photographs. Some are in albums, some in shoeboxes, but most of them are very old and fragile. What's the best way to preserve them for future generations? How should they be displayed?

In general, don't take apart existing photo albums. Like diaries and scrapbooks, they tell their own story. Often they contain the handwriting of the person who made them. Do, however, replace photo corners in old albums if the photos are coming loose.

The exception to the don't-take-apart rule is magnetic photo albums. They contain a sticking material that is detrimental to photos, and should be taken apart.

For photos that aren't in albums, buy archival-quality albums or storage boxes. Or store individual photographs and slides in polyester or polypropylene pages or sleeves. Acid-free sleeves or envelopes are another option.

Keep photographs in a cool, dry place where there is minimal fluctuation in temperature and humidity. Avoid attics.
